Gabrielle Aplin: English Rain

IT DOESN’T really matter what I think of English Rain. It’s already reached number 2 in the charts (held off only by Rod Stewart’s best album in 30-odd years) and if you’ve heard any of her singles on the radio you know what the rest sounds like anyway.
It is well performed, well produced and Ms Aplin’s got a lovely, gentle voice. The radio is all over it like a rash and it’s destined to be bought for mums from here to Timbuktu.
Problem is, its inoffensiveness approaches offensiveness from time to time and as for her version of Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s The Power of Love, let us never speak of it again.
