FOUR years on from third album In This Light and On This Evening and still no-one quite sums up the phrase “indie-rock guitar merchants” like Editors.
Unlike Elbow, who have turned from also-rans to arena-filling megastars in those four years, the Birmingham five-piece have never managed to step out of the shadows of their influences quite well enough to become more than a middle-ranking rock act.
I’d love to report that The Weight of Your Love, with its terrific lead-off single, A Ton of Love, will change all that; unfortunately I can’t.
It’s a decent record, there’s nothing hugely wrong with it and, if you’re a fan of U2, 1980s Echo and the Bunnymen or the afore-mentioned Elbow you’ll find it a pleasant enough listen.
Try as I might, though, I just couldn’t get excited about it. Sorry boys.
