Of Mice and Men: Restoring Force

THERE was a time when heavy metal was the genre that dare not speak its name. It sold in massive quantities – but finding anyone who would admit to liking it was nigh-on impossible. The cool kids claimed that the only people who bought it were spotty-faced teenage boys and leather-clad rock chicks.
In the past few years, though, things have changed and thanks to outfits like Paramore, Biffy Clyro, Bring Me The Horizon and Avenged Sevenfold, metal shares festival stages with the cool kids and graces the cover of the NME.
Californians Of Mice and Men’s third album could well propel them into the metal big league. It’s fast, furious, undeniably exciting and – crucially – sporadically tuneful.
Though You Make Me Sick (“You’re gruesome and disgusting … all you do is make me feel exactly what you are”) conforms perfectly to the leather-lunged, screamy metal template, listen hard to Would You Still Be There and Another You and you’ll find songs that, with a different treatment, could be more pop than metal.
