Foster the People’s second album finds mainman Mark Foster in serious mood.
Only lyrically, mind, and honest lines like “I’ve tried to live without regrets” and “I’ve cried wolf so many times” are at odds with much of the music, especially in the carnival atmosphere of opener Are You What You Want to Be? and single Best Friend, which could be the Scissor Sisters.
The band are just as good on the Beck-like Fire Escape and Goats in Trees and the gorgeous, choral Nevermind which displays an impressive lightness of touch unfortunately not to be found on a couple of the heavier, less affecting tracks.
