American Tom Krell’s third album as How to Dress Well demands to be heard.
Glacial and shimmering, it’s a 12-song collection of electro-funk which comes on a little like 80s Prince locked in a room with Spiritualized, all topped off with Krell’s beautiful, crystal clear voice.
The alt-disco of Repeat Pleasure positively demands a nine-minute Daft Punk remix while the poppier Very Best Friend and Precious Love could – in a different universe – win him chart success, but picking out highlights is almost impossible on an album full of them.
His troubled voice prevents the likes of Repeat Pleasure to be the celebratory stomp it threatens to become, but What is This Heart? is not to be missed.
