The Pierces: Creation

THERE’S been a steady slew of bands over the past year or two who seem happy to turn the clock back to the 1970s, from Savages’ take on post-punk to Haim’s revisiting Fleetwood Mac’s golden era.

Sisters Allison and Catherine Pierce are fellow time travellers, and their fifth album of psychedelic country (for want of a better label) is set to propel them even further into the UK’s consciousness.

Single Kings, which with its swirling guitars and glorious harmonies has been all over radio these past months, is as good an example of how good they can be at their best – and in the title track and Confidence in Love they’ve got at least another couple up their sleeve which are almost as good.

Pleasingly, though, it’s not all willowy psychedelia. Watch out for the stage being stormed by  red-blooded males on the duo’s upcoming UK tour when the Pierce sisters implore them to “take them home if they want to”  on gorgeous ballad I Can Feel, while the genuinely touching Must Be Something shows off a bedside manner to be proud of.
