New Build: Pour It On

Hot Chip is the band that keeps on giving. After this year’s splendid solo effort from singer Alexis Taylor (Await Barbarians) comes this, from band members Al Doyle and Felix Martin.

It’s a hugely different record to Taylor’s and also to anything Hot Chip have put out as a collective.

Where they are (generally) bouncy and buoyant, New Build is calmer and more cerebral, with reference points including early Human League and Depeche Mode.

Fans of electronic grooveathons shouldn’t be too dismayed, though. Your Arrival has a downbeat acid house style feel and it’s easy to envisage DJs mixing its five minutes into something far longer. Just like the album itself, it’s one to get lost in.
