Olly Murs is the the young heir to Robbie Williams’ crown who it’s hard to dislike – the cheeky chappy you’d be happy to let your daughter date.
Since finishing second in the X Factor five years ago, he has proved – along with One Direction – that failing to win Simon Cowell’s annual moneyspinner is no barrier to success.
Never Been Better has a lot to live up to: it follows 2012’s game changer Right Place, Right Time, which almost doubled the sales of his previous effort and in Troublemaker contained a hit which transcended its target audience to take in most of the country.
Like 1D, his target audience is undoubtedly the teen/tween brigade – both acts have released their albums in basic and extra-tracks-included deluxe versions, and just before Christmas too – but Murs’ effort is more palatable to adult ears, and not just on the Paul Weller collaboration Let Me In.
The singer’s cheeky persona is writ large over the sharp pop funk of opener Did You Miss Me?, which addresses the audience much as Williams did in Let Me Entertain You, and there are more highlights in hook-laden single Wrapped Up and its soon-to-come follow-up Up, featuring Demi Lovato.
