If the 10 songs which make up Let it Reign are anything to go by then the new Libertines album, due later this year, is going to be a cracker.
Barat is half of the Libs’ beating heart alongside the infamous Pete Doherty, and may be wanting to prove a point with this album as to who the real talent in that band is, but logic surely dictates that he would not schedule a new Libertines record and then release all his best songs under his own name first.
That being the case, we are in for a treat. Let it Reign could well be the Libertines, combining as it does classic-era Clash with Blur and a hint of The Smiths, not forgetting to add in a liberal dose of melody.
Barat’s voice is a love-it-or-hate-it affair, but his way with words and ability to convey emotion is undeniable – as is his talent with a melody, with lifts every song here above the guitar rock norm.
