Rebecca Ferguson, Lady Sings the Blues

Talk about taking on the big guns. For her third album, Rebecca Ferguson has recorded what they’re all calling a re-interpretation of an entire album by Billie Holiday.

That’s the Billie Holiday, a legend  in the truest sense of the word. The same Billie Holiday whose life was portrayed by Diana Ross, another legend, in the film Lady Sings the Blues. So basically that’s a Liverpool X factor runner-up taking on Billie Holiday and Diana Ross.

And winning? Maybe winning is too strong a word – nobody is going to better Billie – but certainly not letting herself down.

Albums like this have a tendency to come over like pop star karaoke, but that’s not the case here. Ferguson’s voice is a marvel but so is her phrasing and delivery, and she takes ownership of Holiday’s tunes with verve, power and joy.
