James Bay, Chaos and the Calm

After being handed the Brit Awards’ Critics Choice award last month – a victory which prompted one critic to ask “Is it time to say ‘not in my name’?” – radio has bent over backwards to embrace James Bay.

Single Hold Back The River seems not just to have been A-listed by the two biggest national stations but inserted into every show, and it’s hard to believe my household isn’t the only one slightly weary of it by now.

That’s not his fault, of course, and neither is he to blame for the Brit. On the evidence of this debut, though, it’s hard to see what got those anonymous critics so excited. It’s  inoffensive  singer-songwriter fayre and although it’s good to hear him rock out a little on occasion, a few more surprises would have been nice.
