Van Morrison, Duets: Reworking The Catalogue

The duets album is a tried and tested way of getting a new record by a music legend out without the troublesome worry of finding them good, new songs to record.

Find some suitable classics, throw in some contemporary names to sing with and bingo. One sparkling new album.

Duets is a little less cynical, finding Van the Man covering some lesser known songs from his glorious back catalogue with the late Bobby Womack, Mark Knopfler, Mavis Staples, Clare Teal and more.

He’s on fine form, as are they, but in comparison to the life-affirming slices of perfection Van came up with during the 1970s, it’s a long way from essential.
