Mini Mansions are a side project of Michael Shuman, bassist with Queens of the Stone Age – who recently announced a hiatus.
On the basis of The Great Pretenders, you can’t see him wanting to rush back any time soon. Taking in thumping electro pop (Freakout!, Any Emotions); slightly twisted pop (Vertigo) and 1970s rock (Creeps), it’s packed with melody and invention and gets better with every play.
Shuman takes on vocal duties but uses his superstar clout to secure contributions from Brian Wilson and Arctic Monkey Alex Turner, who adds some Sheffield sleaze to Vertigo.
