Duke Special, Look Out Machines!

dukespecial

A week before the release of the third Villagers  album comes the eighth long player by Peter “Duke Special” Wilson.
This is relevant only because of the marked sonic similarity between Look Out Machines! and the music of the far better known Conor “Villagers” O’Brien, with both trading in tuneful folky pop and always-worth-listening-to words.
Lines like “there won’t ever come a time your name won’t shiver down my spine” (Statues) mark Wilson out as a lyricist par excellence but his melodies aren’t half bad either. You can hear the influence of XTC’s Andy Partridge in the ever-so-slightly music hall pop of Step To The Magical but the soulful Stepping Stones and the funkier Son Of The Left Hand prove he is no one-trick pony.
