You never quite know what you’re going to get with Hot Chip.
Precious few other acts – only the much-missed LCD Soundsystem springs to mind – are able to produce high quality, engaging electronic dance one minute and then cerebral fayre full of heart and soul the next.
Despite its opening singles Huarache Lights and Need You Know being aimed firmly at the dancefloor, Why Make Sense? is the work of both bands. So Much Further To Go stands out as the record’s best ballad, but even many of the anthems have a black seam running through them, notably the dark disco of Dark Night (“I’m calling for an angel to bring me a dark night… in my daydreams darkness finds me”).
The epic title track could be the work of a rock band exploring their dancefloor leanings, while Started Right, Cry For You and Easy To Get suggest the band have been listening to late 1970s disco and early 80s electro-soul, as well as absorbing the influences of current competitors Disclosure and Jungle.
