The debut album from Scottish outfit CHVRCHES (say it Churches), 2013’s The Bones of What You Believe, was an outstanding start by the trio, who had in January that year come fifth in the BBC’s Sound of 2013 poll.
Its successor ups the ante somewhat. The band – boffins Iain Cook and Martin Doherty with vocalist and part-time boffin Lauren Mayberry – have absorbed all the brilliant pop music that’s been made since that debut and produced something with sounds like everything and nobody else all at the same time.
There are tunes galore too – almost any one of its 11 tracks could be cherry-picked as a single – and the whole thing clocks in at a pretty-much perfect 42 minutes.
Pop album of the year? Definitely. Album of the year? It’s certainly a contender…
