Judith Hill is a Prince protegé. She sings with him on the lead single from his latest album, HITNRUN Phase One.
Now there was a time – the 1980s, to be precise – when the diminuitive Purple One’s records were of such high quality that such a label meant something. Something other than not much, which is what it generally means today.
Except in Hill’s case, it turns out. Her debut album, co-produced by Hill and Prince, is Saturday night soul of the highest order and finds her outshining her mentor’s most recent output quite magnificently.
It’s little surprise to discover that both Hill’s parents have a rich funk heritage, having played with Sly Stone, Chaka Khan and Rufus among others.
