Bill Ryder-Jones, West Kirby County Primary

Ryder-Jones is treasured in Merseyside as one of the area’s best kept secrets. A founding member of The Coral, he has also collaborated with the Arctic Monkeys on 2013’s AM, joining them onstage for the accompanying tour.
West Kirby County Primary, named after the school in the leafy Wirral suburb where Ryder grew up, is the successor to 2013’s critically acclaimed A Bad Wind Blows In My Heart. It’s great.
His voice is oddly reminiscent of Jarvis Cocker in confidential ballad mode (think Underwear) which, when married to melodic indie pop (think Lemonheads, Sugar, Pixies in poppy mode), works wonderfully.
West Kirby… deserves to make the 32-year-old a star outside Merseyside hipster circles. Go try.
