Cee-Lo Green, Heart Blanche

He’s got an awful lot of competition – soul has never been more popular than it is today – but there’s no reason why Ceee-Lo Green shouldn’t be a bigger star than he is.

Some of the music on Heart Blanche is the kind of stuff Michael Jackson would have been proud to put his name to, and compared to the like of The Weeknd, what’s great about Heart Blanche is its lack of pretension.

From the glitzy soul of ‘Tonight’ to the pop-tastic ‘Thorns’, it all sounds genuine and heartfelt – and he even manages to namecheck Richard Pryor, John Belushi and Philip Seymour Hoffman, on ‘Robin Williams’, without seeming schmaltzy, which is little short of genius.
